Embedded SIMs or eSIMs, what are they?

Even if you aren’t the most tech savvy person, theres a big chance you’ve at least heard of a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card. They’re the tiny little cards located inside your phone that allow you to connect to your wireless carrier’s network and use your phone plan!

However now, embedded SIM cards (eSIMs) are in the spotlight! While you may not be to sure on how they’re different than the normal physical SIM cards, why you might need them, which devices have them, and how to use them, we’re here to help answer those questions!

So what are they?

An eSIM is a digital version
(inside your phone) of the physical SIM card identifying your device virtually to provide your network connection. It’s completely programmable remotely via software and is built into newer smartphones, meaning you wouldn’t have to go to Walmart or in-store to purchase a new SIM card if you wanted to swap phones or wireless carriers. They are used in tablets, smartwatches, drones, and even some newer cars.

What phones have them?

All of the major mobile device manufacturers have eSIM phones, but not all models are eSIM compatible since this is a newer technology. Apple iPhones including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel devices, and Samsung Galaxy devices are all eSIM enabled.  Still unsure about your phone, reach out to us for more information!
